Hoodia gordonii is a succulent like cactus which has been used since thousand of years by a South African tribe to suppress appetite on hunting trips. This tribe is called ‘The San’ commonly known as Bushmen of South Africa.

This plant grows in Kalahari Desert of South Africa. The plant is known to contain a special substance which acts on the brain, by sending a signal to tell the body that it is satisfied and does not need more food. This may thus help to stop the cravings for foods.

The active ingredient works by copying the effect glucose has on nerve cells in the brain. It fools the body into thinking it is full even when it is not. Hoodia appears to contain a molecule which is 10,000 times stronger than glucose.

There are many varieties of Hoodia but only the gordonii variety is known to be the most potent form.

Lot of the other stuff in hoodia, like the fiber and skin, takes up room in the capsule. So the hoodia plant is placed in alcohol, which "pulls out" the active ingredients into the alcohol. This mixture is then strained to remove the fiber and skins. The alcohol is removed, leaving the hoodia powder.

20:1 means that 1 g of this extract was made by using 20 g of the whole plant. It's considered to be more potent than the powdered whole plant.
